Alzheimer's and Gum Disease

Did you know that good oral health could protect you from Alzheimer’s disease? That’s the conclusion of break-through scientific studies published in the last year. We provide patients with regular cleanings at Healthy Smiles Family Dental in Salem, but we hope our patients will come see us whenever they notice the signs of gingivitis. The bacteria that cause it could become a big problem.

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a species of bacteria that causes gum disease. It excretes toxins called gingipains as a means of defending itself against white blood cells. These toxins are common, but are found in especially high levels in the brains and spinal fluid of people who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Testing on animals confirmed that the gingipains from oral bacteria that affects their species trigger the production of neural plaque.

Another study found that P. gingivalis is able to travel from the mouth to the brain in humans. Scientists caution that gum disease is probably not the sole determiner in whether a person develops neural plaque, but they are working on developing drugs based on what we’ve learned about gingipains. In the meantime, prevention is looking more important than ever. If you have bleeding gums or have noticed plaque build-up on a denture, give us a call.

  1. This. This is exactly why I decided to start blogging. It can be very isolating being home with babies, even if you get out and do stuff each day. It is so nice to read about another woman going through it too!

What You Should Know About Periodontal Disease

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

Teeth become discolored by the foods we eat, the beverages we consume, and from lifestyle factors such as smoking, or taking certain medications. Discoloration is a natural part of life but when a patient desires a whiter smile, teeth whitening or bleaching can improve the color of teeth by several shades. At Healthy Smiles Family Dental, Dr. Na Xu gives patients the option to whiten in-office, or in the comfort of his or her own home. Teeth bleaching is one of the most common dental procedures that is performed across the country. Once the teeth become brighter, a person will feel a boost in his or her self-esteem and may desire to smile more than ever before. After scheduling a consultation to decide if whitening is right for you, Dr. Xu will either recommend whitening at home, with custom trays that will be created for you in the office, or laser whitening. If you have questions or concerns regarding teeth whitening or bleaching, please give us a call. To learn about services provid

Dental Implants

For many years, options to restore missing teeth were limited. Fortunately today, these options have expanded into dentures, bridges, and dental implants. At Healthy Smiles Family Dental, our doctors utilize dental implants to restore a patient’s shape of the face and improve their self-esteem all while restoring the health of their mouth. Dental implants, also known as replacement tooth roots, provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable dentures that are designed to match the color of your natural teeth. Dental implants are a successful way to improve your appearance, improve speech, and make it easier to chew. Unlike teeth that slide, dental implants stay in place and can last up to 10 years with proper oral care. If you are missing teeth and would like to explore your restoration options, we can help. If you have questions or concerns regarding dental implants, please give us a call. To learn about services provided at our practice, visit www.myfamilydentistsalem.com for
