What Happens if You Crack a Tooth

Cracking a tooth is a dental emergency. If this happens to one of our patients, they should call us at Healthy Smiles Family Dental in Salem unless they also have series facial lacerations, in which case they should go to an emergency room. The good news is that we can usually save cracked teeth, but we thought our patients would be calmer if they knew ahead of time what usually happens.

Our molars distribute bite force over their wide surfaces. Other teeth are likelier to crack or be pushed outward if used for chewing, while molars can withstand incredible force. But they are also the likeliest teeth to crack or chip a cuspid. A patient should swish salt water in their mouth if they have a dental emergency and should cover a broken tooth with orthodontic wax if they have any available. If not, sugar-free gum will do.

The smallest cracks, called craze lines, can be fixed with bonding or covered with a veneer. When a larger part of a tooth chips off, it may be fixable with a partial crown, which would be fitted for with an impression from the patient’s mouth. A crack that goes deep enough to expose pulp will require a root canal to remove potentially infected material, which might be followed by placement of a new crown. Teeth that are cracked at the root will need to be removed and replaced with an implant or partial denture. Regardless, we can treat a patient’s pain and put together the best plan to restore their bite function and the brilliance of their smile.

What You Should Know About Periodontal Disease

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

Teeth become discolored by the foods we eat, the beverages we consume, and from lifestyle factors such as smoking, or taking certain medications. Discoloration is a natural part of life but when a patient desires a whiter smile, teeth whitening or bleaching can improve the color of teeth by several shades. At Healthy Smiles Family Dental, Dr. Na Xu gives patients the option to whiten in-office, or in the comfort of his or her own home. Teeth bleaching is one of the most common dental procedures that is performed across the country. Once the teeth become brighter, a person will feel a boost in his or her self-esteem and may desire to smile more than ever before. After scheduling a consultation to decide if whitening is right for you, Dr. Xu will either recommend whitening at home, with custom trays that will be created for you in the office, or laser whitening. If you have questions or concerns regarding teeth whitening or bleaching, please give us a call. To learn about services provid

Dental Implants

For many years, options to restore missing teeth were limited. Fortunately today, these options have expanded into dentures, bridges, and dental implants. At Healthy Smiles Family Dental, our doctors utilize dental implants to restore a patient’s shape of the face and improve their self-esteem all while restoring the health of their mouth. Dental implants, also known as replacement tooth roots, provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable dentures that are designed to match the color of your natural teeth. Dental implants are a successful way to improve your appearance, improve speech, and make it easier to chew. Unlike teeth that slide, dental implants stay in place and can last up to 10 years with proper oral care. If you are missing teeth and would like to explore your restoration options, we can help. If you have questions or concerns regarding dental implants, please give us a call. To learn about services provided at our practice, visit www.myfamilydentistsalem.com for
